Background
The BMW E30 is the second generation BMW 3-series produced from 1982 to 1994 with the convertible body style being added to the range as part of a minor update in 1985. The understated styling produced by Claus Luthe defined many of the cool styling features that were to become a BMW hallmark for many years. In addition the vastly improved engineering resulted in much improved driver dynamics and the straight 6 cylinder versions with the M20 engine, manual gearbox and rear wheel drive were the ones to have.
The Car
This particular BMW E30 was specified in a great colour combination of Alpinweiss with Indigo Leather interior and a matching blue hood. It also has the much more supportive and adjustable sports seats and a BMW MTech 1 steering wheel. Being a series 1 car, it has the manual hood operation, chrome bumpers and more chrome detailing than later cars. It rides on a lovely set of original cross spoke alloy wheels and is fitted with an aftermarket stainless steel sports exhaust.
It’s History
Supplied new by Snows in Portsmouth on 03 February 1998, this BMW has had just 3 owners, the last since 2005. The first two owners being a husband and wife. This means the car comes with the full original BMW book pack, stamped service history and even the rechargeable glove box torch that is usually missing. In the boot, the supplied toolkit is complete, in place and in great condition.
The BMW was dry stored off the road since 2018 and has recently undergone a full re-commissioning that included a full suspension re-build and re-bush, new cam belt, replaced clutch and release bearing, a new hood and heater control valve. New tyres and refurbished wheels to name some of the items attended to.
On the Road
The BMW drives really nicely either hood up or down and when down you have a lovely uncluttered outline and suburb visibility. The straight six engine loves to rev and produces a surprising turn of speed helped by the relatively low weight of the car and the usual slick BMW manual gearbox. The steering is nicely weighted and you have the lovely traditional rear wheel handling that makes these cars great fun to drive along favourite roads top down.
Conclusion
A quick look at the underside of this car will tell you all you need to know about its condition, it is as good as it looks and with 1980’s BMWs hitting something of a sweet spot in terms of “coolness” these increasingly collectable iconic BMWs especially when fitted with BMWs famed 6 cylinder engines are a joy to own and drive.
